敦 煌 ― 壮 麗 な る 文 化 が 息 づ く 交 差 点 か つ て シ ル ク ロ ー ド 西 域 に 位 置 し た 敦 煌 は 、 宗 教 、 文 化 、 交 易 が 交 わ る 交 差 点 と し て 栄 え 、 多 様 な 民 族 が 行 き 交 う な か 、 人 類 文 明 の 精 華 が 結 晶 し た 祝 祭 の 地 と な っ た 。 乾 い た 大 地 と 過 酷 な 自 然 条 件 の な か に あ っ て も 、 こ の 地 は 文 化 が 静 か に 芽 吹 き 、 芸 術 が 花 開 く 沃 土 で あ り 続 け た 。 と り わ け 漢 や 唐 の 時 代 に は 、 世 界 と 通 じ る 普 遍 的 な 文 化 の ハ ブ と し て 機 能 し て い た 。 二 十 世 紀 初 頭 、 そ の 「 世 界 性 」 は 再 び 呼 び 覚 ま さ れ 、 莫 高 窟 の 美 術 品 や 文 書 は 世 界 各 地 へ と 旅 立 ち 、 芸 術 や 思 想 に 新 た な 視 座 と イ ン ス ピ レ ー シ ョ ン を も た ら し た 。 そ れ ら の 表 現 は 今 な お 、 私 た ち に 問 い か け る 。 文 化 と は 何 か 。 芸 術 は ど こ か ら 来 て 、 ど こ へ 向 か う の か 。 長 安 、 洛 陽 、 そ し て 奈 良 — — そ れ ら の 都 市 に は 今 も 、「 敦 煌 の 記 憶 」 が 静 か に 息 づ い て い る 。

Dun Huang — A Grand Celebration of Civilization Dun Huang, as a place name, evokes a grand celebration. True to the meaning of its characters, it emerged under the harsh conditions of the western reaches of the Silk Road. A thousand years ago, shaped by the convergence of religion, culture, and commerce, Dun Huang became a magnificent gathering of human civilizations, nourished by the shared contributions of many ethnic cultures. During the Han and Tang dynasties, Dun Huang was profoundly global. This cosmopolitan spirit was awakened once more in the early 20th century, when the cultural relics of the Dun Huang caves began to spread across the world. Influenced by these artworks, we are able to trace and compare the roots of artistic and cultural traditions. The legacy of Dun Huang’s grandeur can still be felt today—in the lingering echoes of Long-standing capitals such as Chang ’an and Luoyang, as well as in Nara, Japan—reminding us of the enduring resonance of its sublime art.
