Artist Statement:
My parents ran a Chinese restaurant in Tokyo for many years before transitioning to a Japanese yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant for a decade. This experience became a catalyst for me to project complex emotions onto "meat" - an everyday ingredient. Meat transformed from being merely a food foundation into a vessel carrying cultural intersections and family memories. Over the years, the texture, color, and cutting techniques of meat gradually became integrated into my own visual language. The act of painting transcends mere representation, becoming an alternative expression of emotion. The layering of brushstrokes and bleeding of colors not only depict meat itself but also reflect fragmented life memories.

両親は長年東京で中華料理店を営み、その後十年にわたり日式焼肉店へと転じました。この経験は、私にとって「肉」という日常的な食材に複雑な感情を投影する契機となりました。肉は単なる食物の基盤ではなく、文化的交錯や家族の記憶を内包する存在へと変わっていったのです。
長い歳月のなかで、肉の肌理や色彩、切り方は次第に私自身の視覚言語へと取り込まれていきました。絵画行為は、単なる再現を超え、感情の代替表現となります。筆致の重なりや色彩のにじみは、肉そのものを描写する一方で、断片化された生活の記憶をも映し出しています。
CHU SHAOWEI was born in 1995 and currently creates artwork based in both China and Japan. He received his MFA from oil Painting Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 2020.
