A Grand Celebration of Civilization

Dun Huang, as a place name, evokes a grand celebration. True to the meaning of its characters, it emerged under the harsh conditions of the western reaches of the Silk Road. A thousand years ago, shaped by the convergence of religion, culture, and commerce, Dun Huang became a magnificent gathering of human civilizations, nourished by the shared contributions of many ethnic cultures. During the Han and Tang dynasties, Dun Huang was profoundly global.

This cosmopolitan spirit was awakened once more in the early 20th century, when the cultural relics of the Dun Huang caves began to spread across the world. Influenced by these artworks, we are able to trace and compare the roots of artistic and cultural traditions.

The legacy of Dun Huang’s grandeur can still be felt today—in the lingering echoes of Long-standing capitals such as Chang’an and Luoyang, as well as in Nara, Japan—reminding us of the enduring resonance of its sublime art.

敦煌ー壮麗なる文化が息づく交差点

かつてシルクロード西域に位置した敦煌は、赤と各化、交が交わる交法としてえ、多様な民族が行き交うなか、人類文明の精華が結晶した祝祭の地となっ乾いた大地と過酷な自然条件のなかにあっても、この地は文化が静かに芽吹き、芸術が花開く沃土であり続けた。とりわけ漢や唐の時代には、世界と通じる普遍的な文化のハブとして機能していた。

二十世紀初頭、その「世界性」は再び呼び覚まされ、真高窟の美術品や文書は世界各地へと旅立ち、芸術や思想に新たな視座とインスピレーションをもたらした。それらの表現は今なお、私たちに問いかける。文化とは何か。芸術はどこから来て、どこへ向かうのか。

長安、洛陽、そして奈良ーーそれらの都市には今も、「敦煌の記憶」が静かに息づいている。

アーティスト履歴 

yoYo was born in 1982 and graduated from the Arts College of Xi’an Fanyi University in 2004. From 2007 to 2008, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany. He currently lives and works in Xi’an, China, and Osaka, Japan.
Born and raised in a northern Chinese city where ceramics production has been the core industry for centuries, yoYo was deeply fascinated in childhood by the rough, damaged, unfinished paintings and the distinctive decorative patterns found on ruins throughout the city. These images revealed to him the trajectory of artistic development and left a profound influence on his later practice.

yoYoは1982年に生まれ、2004年に西安翻訳学院芸術学院を卒業。2007年から2008年にかけてドイツのデュッセルドルフ美術大学で学び、現在は中国・西安と日本・大阪を拠点に制作活動を行っている。
yoYoは、何世紀にもわたり陶磁器生産を基幹産業としてきた中国北部の都市に生まれ育った。幼少期、街の至るところで見かけた粗削りで破損した未完の絵画や、遺構に残された独特の装飾文様に強く心を惹かれた。それらは彼にとって芸術の発展を示すものとなり、後の創作活動に深い影響を与えた。
